5 Top News Tips from the Sakai/Apereo June *2013* Conference

A couple of us attended the Sakai/Apereo Conference held in June, 2013, and it was very impressive!

1) Sakai has merged with another non-profit open source software organization called Jasig, and the merged organization is called Apereo Foundation. Sakai will continue with it's work, and of course keep it's name, but we will have more resources and tools to work with!

2) Sakai 2.9 is the latest full version of Sakai-which we've had Sakai 2.9 since July, 2012! Officially, Sakai 2.9 was not released until November, 2012. We decided to get the latest version early, so we could move our Blackboard content once to Sakai.

3) Want to meet with your students online? Check out below the Meetings tool session video (Meetings is also called BigBlueButton). For tips and tricks, review our Meetings wiki postings. Problems viewing the video below? Here's the link: Meetings tool session video

4) Lessons and Tests and Quizzes: Developers and usability experts are working on making both tools easier to use, and downright pretty/handsome. Check out our wiki for more Tips and Tricks for Lessons and/or Tests and Quizzes.

5) Sakai has been used for a few MOOC's (Massive Open Online Courses). If you want to hear more about it, here's the "EDUlib: A MOOC Platform Using SAKAI" session video
Note: The MOOC's required extensive money, expert infrastructure/platform, usually a vendor (IT/networking resources, instructional designers, multimedia experts, and subject matter experts). Expert registration systems and IT support was also required.
